Highland Lake Fish Passage Project
Cumberland County, Maine

Highland Lake Fish Passage beside damThe Highland Lake dam was built in 1936 and is owned by the Town of Westbook.  A concrete denil fish way owned by the Maine Department of Marine Resources (MDMR) was constructed at the dam in 1988 to provide up- and downstream passage of alewives.  In 1996, a storm caused a partial breach in the dam, but a new dam was constructed in the spring of 2000.  Monitoring conducted by MDMR indicated that the dam, fish way, and stream channel configuration were passing very few fish.  The intent of this project was to improve the functionality of the fish way itself by making modifications to it and the dam, as well as to restore the stream channel in the immediate area.
