New NRCS State Conservationist Announced
Bangor, ME – April 7, 2009 – The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) has announced that Juan Hernandez will serve as the State Conservationist
in Maine, providing overall leadership for NRCS operations statewide. Hernandez
will begin his duties in Maine on April 12, 2009.
Hernandez comes to Maine from Nebraska where he has served as the Assistant
State Conservationist for Field Operations. His prior service with NRCS includes
Assistant State Conservationist for Operations in Utah, District Conservationist
in Arkansas, and District Conservationist in Wisconsin. He started his career
with NRCS as a student trainee in Pennsylvania.
Born in Puerto Rico, Hernandez grew up on a small coffee plantation, learning
the “in’s and out’s” of working on a farm, the farm work ethic, and humbleness
that only a farmer can teach. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural
Sciences from the University of Puerto Rico.
Hernandez replaces Joyce Swartzendruber who transferred in early February to
Montana to serve as State Conservationist. In the interim, Terrell Erickson from
NRCS in Washington, DC has served as Acting State Conservationist.
