Earth Team Volunteers Plant Trees/Shrubs

Volunteers planting trees along side of East Machias RiverThe Boy Scouts of America, the East Machias Watershed Council, the University of Maine at Machias Science students and other interested students, citizens and volunteers planted trees and shrubs as part of the culmination of the East Machias dam removal.  Over 500 trees and shrubs were planted along the East Machias River on the Town of East Machias and Downeast Salmon Federation properties. The Natural Resources Conservation Service provided funding and technical assistance for this project through the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program.  A variety of flowering and fruit-producing trees and shrubs were planted to serve as a benefit to wildlife as well as to stabilize the banks in some areas. Boy Scout participants were representing three different troops, including members of the international Calais, Maine - St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada troop.  Assistance for this project was also provided by the Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District and Project SHARE.
